Understanding the Basics of the DOT Physical Exam

Nov 22, 2022

Have you heard of the Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam but aren't quite sure what it is or if you need one? A DOT physical exam is a medical examination mandated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and is required for commercial motor vehicle drivers. Its purpose is to ensure that drivers are physically and mentally fit to operate a commercial motor vehicle. Read further to find out more about this exam.

Who Needs a DOT Physical Exam?

Any driver who operates a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) is required to undergo this exam. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), a CMV is defined as a vehicle used to transport goods or passengers. It weighs 10,001 pounds or more, may transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver), or transports hazardous materials in quantities that require placarding. If you drive a vehicle that falls into any of these categories, you'll need to get a DOT physical exam.

What Does the Exam Include?

DOT exams are conducted by licensed medical examiners who have been trained and certified by the FMCSA. The medical examiner will go over your medical history and conduct a physical examination. They'll also test your vision and hearing. If you have a condition that may impact your ability to drive, the medical examiner will determine if it can be treated or managed without posing a risk to you or others on the road.

How Long Is the Exam Valid For?

A DOT physical exam is valid for up to 24 months, according to the FMCSA. However, your medical certificate may only have a validity of fewer than 24 months if the examiner finds you have a condition that needs monitoring. In this case, you'll need to follow the medical examiner's instructions and get re-examined when your certificate expires.

How Can I Get a DOT Physical Exam?

You can get an exam from any licensed medical examiner who is trained and certified by the FMCSA. Once you've found a medical examiner, you will need to bring your driver's license, a list of your current medications, and your medical history.

If you're a commercial motor vehicle driver, a DOT physical exam is required. Now that you know more about what the exam is and what it entails, you can be better prepared for your appointment. Make an appointment for your exam today by contacting OccMed Associates LP.
